The Calgary Stampeders and Montreal Alouettes will kick off Week 17 of the CFL season on Friday night. Calgary enters this game at 8-5 and in second place in the West. The return of Davis Alexander at quarterback is a major development for Montreal. Alexander was out for eight games with a hamstring injury. But he is back in practice and expected to start this week. In his absence, Montreal was forced to rotate through several signal-callers. The Alouettes are 3–7 without Alexander compared to a perfect 4–0 when he’s been under center this season.
Calgary has been good on defense for most of the season. But their defense struggled in a blowout loss to the BC Lions in their last game. The Stamps lost that game 52–23 and were not good enough on either side of the ball. That kind of loss leaves question marks about this team heading into Montreal.
The key for the Als is Alexander’s reintroduction into their offense. He’s thrown for 1,106 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions in 2025 when healthy. His presence should help rectify the offensive inconsistencies the Alouettes endured with backup QBs like McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Caleb Evans, and James Morgan.
Calgary's Vernon Adams remains the central piece of their offense. In their loss to BC, he went 11/16 for 125 yards, but threw two interceptions and failed to throw a passing touchdown. He has 2,951 passing yards on the season, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Adams has been a high-risk, high-reward quarterback this year and he needs to take care of the football this week.

I think we are going to see a close game for the most part here. But the Alouettes should have the upper hand when all is said and done. Getting Alexander back should do wonders for the Alouettes on offense, as long as he doesn't struggle in his return from injury. Adams' volatility should give the Als an extra possession or two via turnovers. I'll lay the points with Montreal in one of the best games of the CFL Week 17 schedule.
