The race for the SEC regular season title was won by the Florida Gators this season. The defending national champions had a hard time early in the season, but figured things out as the year went along, and they enter postseason play on an 11-game winning streak. Florida's frontcourt depth is the best in the country and that could be enough to propel them to a tournament title here.
Along with Florida, teams like Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas all have great chances to win the SEC tourney. That tournament will come down to which teams can maintain their composure and execute in clutch situations, as no game should be all that lopsided when the best of the best square off in Nashville. Of course, Tennessee and Vanderbilt get a small advantage playing in their home state and will try to use that to make a deep run.
As a whole, the SEC is arguably the best conference in college basketball this season, which will set up an incredible SEC tournament. This league has at least three teams that could realistically win a national championship in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. That will make this conference tournament an absolute gauntlet, as whoever comes out on top will have to beat multiple elite teams in order to get the job done.
The Southeastern Conference, better known as the SEC, held its first men’s basketball tournament in 1933. In the inaugural tournament, the Kentucky Wildcats beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs by a score of 46-27. This was the first of Kentucky’s 31 tournament championships.
To put the number of Kentucky’s SEC tournament wins into perspective, the team with the second-most SEC men’s basketball tournament championships is Alabama with eight. Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas A&M have yet to win one. South Carolina has played in two championship games while Texas A&M made it to the big game thrice, leaving Missouri and the newly-joined Texas and Oklahoma as the only SEC men’s basketball teams to never make it to the finals.
Since 2010, the Wildcats have claimed six SEC Tournament championships, including a run of four straight titles between 2015 and 2018. Their tournament championship run came to an end in 2019 when they fell to Tennessee in the semifinals. The Volunteers went on to lose to Auburn who won their second SEC tournament championship. As is the case with all SEC tournament winners, the Tigers earned an automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament, where they advanced to the Final Four for the first time in the school’s history.
The SEC is made up of 16 schools that play an absolutely grueling conference schedule before the SEC single-elimination tournament begins. Tournament seeding is determined by the regular season standings. SEC tournament champions have gone on to win the NCAA tournament 12 times. Of those 12 championships, Kentucky has 8 while Florida has three, thanks to back-to-back tournament wins in 2006 and 2007, along with their title triumph in 2025.
