Both of these teams are ranked in the top 20 in the country so far this season and will try to keep it that way with a win in Fayetteville. Both the Volunteers and Razorbacks enter SEC play with strong momentum after successful nonconference slates. Tennessee finished non-conference play with a resounding 105-54 victory over South Carolina State, led by Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Nate Ament. Gillespie has been Tennessee’s go-to scorer at 17.8 points per game, with Ament contributing 15.4 points and nearly 7 rebounds per outing. Tennessee’s defense has held opponents to under 38% shooting and under 29% from three, making the Vols a tough opponent on both ends of the floor.
Arkansas has thrived at home this season and features one of the SEC’s most dynamic young scorers in Darius Acuff Jr., who averages 18.8 points and 6.2 assists per game. Freshman Meleek Thomas is another offensive threat, averaging over 15 points per game and leading the team in three-point makes. Arkansas boasts a potent offense that has eclipsed 100 points multiple times, finishing last game with a 103-74 win over James Madison. Home court advantage and offensive balance make the Razorbacks a serious threat as they open SEC play under John Calipari.
I'm laying the 2.5 points with the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday afternoon. The Vols haven't had a ton of experience on the road yet this season and having to jump right into SEC play on the road is not an enviable task by any stretch of the imagination. I'll take the Hogs to start their SEC play for the year on a high note, as they should beat Tennessee and move up in the rankings by the time Monday rolls around.
