The Yankees remain one of the American League's stronger clubs at 37-26, but the lineup is dealing with the absence of Aaron Judge, who was placed on the injured list with a rib injury. Boston enters the game at 27-35 and has played better on the road than at Fenway Park this season. Saturday's pitching matchup features Ranger Suarez for Boston against Will Warren for New York, a duel between two starters carrying ERAs in the low 3.00s.
While Boston grabbed the opener, New York still owns the stronger overall statistical resume entering Saturday. Looking at some of the advanced metrics on the pitching side of things, these pitching staffs are not as far apart as raw ERA would suggest. These teams are separated by 0.09 in xFIP, which does a better job of measuring true pitching ability than simply counting earned runs, which could be skewed by fielding and other factors. And with Aaron Judge out, that closely contested matchup of pitching staffs should be enough to help the Sox win in the Bronx for the second night in a row.
