The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians will see their American League Wild Card series come down to one final game. Game 3 on Thursday will determine which team advances to the ALDS starting on Saturday. Detroit grabbed Game 1 behind a dominant performance from Tarik Skubal, but Cleveland fought back in Game 2 to even the series. One of the biggest questions heading into Game 3 is how each team will manage its arms. Detroit is expected to send Jack Flaherty to the mound to start things off. Flaherty has posted a 4.64 ERA during the regular season and lost two straight starts to Cleveland at the end of the regular season. Flaherty could be on a short leash here with so much on the line.
Cleveland used Gavin Williams in Game 1 and Tanner Bibee in Game 2. They are likely to turn to Slade Cecconi to start this contest. Cecconi has less postseason experience, but he pitched well in September to help the Guardians come back and win the AL Central. The Guardians' bullpen has been battle-tested in 2025 and they will also be important if Cleveland is going to put Detroit away.
