The National League West race continues Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers head back into Petco Park for the second game of this week's series against the San Diego Padres. Monday’s opener turned into a tight pitching duel, with San Diego grabbing a 1-0 win behind seven scoreless innings from Michael King. The rematch sets up differently, though, with the Dodgers sending Emmet Sheehan to the mound against Padres right-hander Griffin Canning. More scoring will be expected in this Dodgers vs Padres rematch, though it will be hard to get a more competitive game this time around.
Emmet Sheehan has delivered decent enough innings for the Dodgers this season, posting a 3-1 record with a 4.54 ERA and 49 strikeouts across 41.2 innings. His strikeout ability gives Los Angeles a strong edge in this matchup, especially against a Padres lineup that has struggled at times against power pitching. Sheehan also comes into this start after a solid outing against San Francisco in which he allowed 2 runs over 6 innings.
Canning has had a difficult start to his Padres tenure after returning from injury. Through 11 innings, he owns a 10.64 ERA with a 2.18 WHIP, allowing heavy traffic on the bases nearly every inning. His recent outing against Milwaukee was especially rough, as he surrendered 6 runs before finishing the second inning. Facing the Dodgers lineup is a far tougher assignment.
Monday’s opener showed how tight this rivalry can become when elite pitching takes over. Tuesday’s game will be different, as both pitchers are vulnerable to giving up more runs than what we saw on Monday night. Sheehan has been far steadier than Canning, and Los Angeles carries one of baseball’s deepest lineups into a favorable matchup against a pitcher struggling badly with command and contact management. But I think both sides will do their share of scoring here, and my best bet for this matchup is the over.
