The Toronto Blue Jays open a divisional series against the New York Yankees on Monday night at Yankee Stadium with both clubs heading in different directions in the American League East standings. Toronto snapped a rough stretch with a series win in Detroit over the weekend, while New York returns home after a difficult road trip that ended with another late loss against the Mets in the Subway Series going into this Blue Jays vs Yankees matchup.
The Yankees still own one of the best offenses in baseball. Toronto has struggled for consistency offensively, although Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Daulton Varsho, and Kazuma Okamoto have shown signs of life over the past week. Patrick Corbin enters with a respectable 3.93 ERA for the Blue Jays. The Yankees have handled left-handed pitching well this season thanks to their right-handed power bats. Corbin has allowed 38 hits in 34.1 innings, and his strikeout rate remains modest. If he falls behind in counts, the Yankees have enough power to create damage quickly in the middle innings.
Ryan Weathers has been one of the more surprising early contributors for New York. The left-hander carries a 3.00 ERA with 54 strikeouts and a 1.11 WHIP across 45 innings. His ability to limit free passes has helped stabilize a Yankees rotation dealing with injuries to Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and Clarke Schmidt. Toronto has produced a .242 team batting average, but the lineup still lacks consistent power production outside of a small group of hitters.
While the Yankees have stumbled during the past week, this spot sets up well for a bounce-back performance at home. Ryan Weathers has delivered quality innings throughout the first part of the season, and New York should have opportunities against Patrick Corbin once the lineup turns over a second time. The Yankees also remain far more dangerous offensively, especially in Yankee Stadium.
