The Boston Celtics are now the firm favorites in the Atlantic Division despite not having Jayson Tatum on the court for most of this season. Tatum tore his Achilles tendon during the playoffs last postseason, and his absence has been a factor for the Celtics this year. But Jaylen Brown stepped up in his absence, and Tatum made a very quick return from such a significant injury, making it hard for the rest of this division to keep up with Boston's quality.
The New York Knicks are looking like they are going to fall short of the Celtics in the Atlantic Division this season. They have one of the best players in all of basketball leading them in Jalen Brunson. And behind Brunson is a group of hard-nosed players who make hustle plays and do whatever it takes to win. The health of the Knicks' bench will be important as they try to make a deep playoff run this season, especially for someone like Mitchell Robinson, who is so influential to what the Knicks like to do on the offensive glass.
The change in expectations for the Knicks has been especially interesting to monitor in recent seasons. They went from a laughingstock to a team that considers it a failure not to reach the NBA Finals almost overnight. Now the Knicks have to deliver on their high expectations and get to their first Finals since Larry Johnson and Latrell Sprewell were among their top players. But Boston will be tough for them to get past once again.
Philadelphia is an interesting team in the Atlantic Division. When Joel Embiid and Paul George are on the floor, they are capable of beating most teams in the NBA on any given night. Unfortunately, the Sixers aren't always with those stars on the floor. Tyrese Maxey has been a consistent presence for the Sixers, but their ceiling is only as high as Embiid and George allow it to be right now. Embiid and George are back on the floor just in time for the playoffs, with the question being whether they can put things together and get to the Finals for the first time with Embiid on their roster.
The Toronto Raptors have put together a solid group north of the border. Brandon Ingram is a reliable crunch-time scorer, while RJ Barrett and Scottie Barnes make a ton of winning plays for them. The question with this group will be how high their ceiling can possibly be when compared to the New Yorks and Bostons of the world, but the Raptors are certainly heading in the right direction and look like a threat to make the top six in the East.
The Brooklyn Nets are openly tanking at this point in time. Michael Porter Jr. is content to shoot 1000 times per night if they let him. And with the lack of talent around him, we usually don't see anything too far off from that. The Nets are once again headed for last place in the Atlantic, and they will need something huge to happen in the near future to change their trajectory as a franchise.
