The Denver Nuggets head into Sunday’s contest against the Brooklyn Nets as clear favorites on the road, though this version of Denver looks different without superstar Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets (23-11) have been hit hard by injuries and will test their depth when they visit the Nets (10-22) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Denver’s injury situation is severe, with Nikola Jokic out due to a knee issue that sidelines him for at least a month and leaves the team without its MVP-caliber leader. Backup center Jonas Valanciunas is also out for weeks with a calf strain, while Cameron Johnson is out. But relief could be on the way for the Nuggets, as Christian Braun and Aaron Gordon are questionable. Jamal Murray is probable but may see a heavy usage role if he plays. The Nuggets have lost three of their last four games and are hoping to have Braun and Gordon back to stop the bleeding somewhat.
Brooklyn is enduring a tough stretch as well. The Nets have lost three straight and are near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn was blown out by the Washington Wizards in their last outing, an embarrassing outcome given how bad Washington has been in recent years.
Michael Porter Jr. is probable but dealing with illness, and Nic Claxton is listed as day-to-day due to personal reasons, while Haywood Highsmith is out for Brooklyn. That has pushed players like Day’Ron Sharpe, Drake Powell, and Nolan Traore into larger roles for a young Nets roster still finding its identity. Brooklyn ranks near the bottom of the NBA in scoring and rebounding, and a lack of consistent production has hampered their ability to close out games.

Despite the absence of Jokic and other key Nuggets contributors, Denver still has more roster talent and experience than Brooklyn, even against a Nets team hungry for a home victory. If Denver has Braun and Gordon back, they should roll in this game, but I'll take the Nuggets to cover the number whether or not that duo suits up.
