The Calgary Flames will face the Vancouver Canucks in a Western Canadian matchup in the NHL on Thursday night. Calgary enters this game fresh off a 4–3 shootout win in Edmonton, where they erased a 3–0 deficit midway through the second period. They will now have to regroup just a day later to play a Canucks team making their debut in the 2025-26 season. Calgary enters this game on the strength of a gutsy comeback win in Edmonton, erasing a 3–0 deficit and outlasting the Oilers in an eight-round shootout. Nazem Kadri delivered the decisive goal, Matvei Gridin scored in his NHL debut, and Dustin Wolf made 32 saves. The Flames showed an impressive amount of heart in that game and they will try to do the same here.
Vancouver will open their season tonight. Their last preseason game was an 8–1 win over Calgary. Vancouver lost Nils Hoglander to surgery (8–10 weeks) in that contest, which will be a notable absence up front. But the Canucks will be aiming for a strong home start here.
Dustin Wolf helped the Flames to get a win in their season opener. But he is unlikely to play for a second night in a row. Instead, we should see Devin Cooley get his first start in net for Calgary. For Vancouver, Thatcher Demko is expected to get the start. Demko’s career record against Calgary at home is respectable and the Canucks seem to want to lean on Demko’s stability after health questions hurt him a season ago.
Calgary received an immediate impact from Nazem Kadri in their season opener. He had an assist to set up Calgary's first goal of the season and he scored the winning goal in the shootout. Kadri will be a key playmaker for Calgary again here, especially with the team skating on tired legs tonight.
Vancouver’s top lines remain dangerous. Quinn Hughes leads the defense with puck movement and playmaking. Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, and Conor Garland are expected to carry much of the load offensively.

I am expecting the rest disadvantage for the Flames to be too much for them to overcome in this contest. Calgary should fall behind for a second straight night, but they will not come back this time around. I recommend laying the puckline with Vancouver against a Flames team that will have fatigue concerns to deal with.
