Friday’s Central Division matchup between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues is an important one at Enterprise Center. The Blues enter slightly favored by oddsmakers, but both clubs have experienced recent highs and lows in December and we could be in for an exciting contest here. The Blackhawks are coming off a strong 3-0 win over the New York Rangers in their most recent outing, with Spencer Knight delivering his second shutout of the season while Connor Bedard had a goal and an assist. Chicago had given up 13 goals over the two games before that shutout win and the Blackhawks will try to build on their defensive performance from their last game here.
The Blues have struggled defensively, falling 7-2 to the Nashville Predators in their latest game and losing 5-2 to the Boston Bruins earlier in the week. St. Louis has been inconsistent on both ends of the ice, going 11-14-7 this season, putting them in seventh place in the Central Division. The Blues are slightly favored in this game, but they need to be better defensively.
Chicago’s Spencer Knight has stabilized the Blackhawks in net, sporting a 2.50 GAA this season. Knight’s strong play was on display against the Rangers and will be key if Chicago is to contain the Blues’ offense. St. Louis’ goaltending has been less consistent, with Joel Hofer and Jordan Binnington both seeing time in net amid recent defensive struggles, including a seven-goal outing against Nashville that likely dented their confidence further.
Connor Bedard continues to lead the Blackhawks offensively with top-tier scoring production, leading Chicago in goals and assists and amassing an impressive 42 points on the season. Tyler Bertuzzi and Louis Crevier have chipped in some scoring, but Bedard’s performance will be the deciding factor if Chicago can win. Above all else, I'm expecting us to see a high-scoring game between the Blackhawks and Blues on Friday night. Both of these teams have had struggles on defense recently and I'm not prepared to overreact to the Blackhawks' shutout win over the Rangers. I'll go with the over in what should be an entertaining game between Central Division opponents.
