Detroit enters this game just above .500 and on top of the Atlantic Division, while the Capitals are sitting with a strong record and in second place in the Metropolitan Division standings. The Capitals enter this game off a strong performance, most recently earning a 4-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at home. Washington has gone 6-2-2 in its last 10 outings, averaging better than three goals per game and showing consistency on both ends of the ice.
Detroit has a 6-2-1 record over its last nine contests, but struggled in its latest game, losing 4-1 at home to the Utah Mammoth. The Red Wings average over 3.00 goals per game, but they have a negative goal differential thanks to their struggles on defense.
Detroit’s John Gibson has been below average this season, posting a 3.07 goals-against average and .890 save percentage. His ability to keep Detroit in games will be tested against a very good Capitals team. Washington’s Logan Thompson has been excellent, entering this contest with a 2.00 GAA and a save percentage of .925 with two shutouts of his own. The goaltender matchup favors the Capitals going into this matchup.
Dylan Larkin continues to carry the Detroit offense with consistent production, and Alex DeBrincat has shown chemistry with his linemates in recent weeks. On Washington’s side, Tom Wilson leads the Caps in both points and goals this season. John Carlson has also been a huge threat, contributing a team-high 20 assists entering this one.

The lack of consistent defending from the Red Wings is worrisome going into a game on the road with an early start. But instead of laying the juice with the Capitals, I'm going with the under in this matchup. The goaltending of the Capitals has been nothing short of elite this year and that should make it hard enough for Detroit to score to keep this game under the total.
