These teams occupy two of the bottom three spots in the Metropolitan Division standings and have dropped four of their last five games. But someone has to win this game, whether it be in regulation, a shootout, or anything in between. The Flyers opened the post-Olympics portion of their schedule with a loss on Wednesday night to the Washington Capitals on the road. That was the fourth loss for Philly in five games and the Flyers are starting to see their postseason hopes slip away in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers have also dropped four of their last five games and are opening their post-break schedule with this contest, where they hope to start their climb out of last place in the Metro.
Philadelphia’s Dan Vladar has been solid with a .905 save percentage and a modest goals-against average, keeping the Flyers in games and giving them a chance to compete night in and night out. New York’s Igor Shesterkin has missed a significant amount of time this season due to injury. He could come back for this game or sometime soon after the conclusion of the break. If he isn't able to go, it will be Jonathan Quick between the pipes for New York.
For the Flyers, their offense usually comes from players like Travis Konecny, who has paced the team with strong scoring output, and Trevor Zegras providing playmaking and goal scoring. The Rangers counter with Mika Zibanejad leading their scoring efforts, and he will need to step up in a big way to make up for the trade of Artemi Panarin, who made his debut with the LA Kings on Wednesday.
