The Sharks come into this game confident after posting a 3-2 win against the Capitals thanks to a three-goal second period and Alex Nedeljkovic’s 21 saves. That victory was San Jose’s seventh in their last nine outings, as the Sharks continue to be a team playing above expectations. However, they’ve also suffered some heavy defeats, notably a 7-2 loss to the Golden Knights where San Jose’s defensive struggles were exposed. Which version of the San Jose defense shows up could help decide this game as well.
Detroit has been solid at home and holds a superior overall record, winning four of their last five and showing balance between offense and defense that has translated into consistent results throughout the season. The Wings enter Friday night one point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place in the Atlantic Division and they could end the night in sole possession of first place, depending on how both teams perform.
For Detroit, veteran John Gibson has provided stability and proven capable of stealing games, including a recent shutout with 39 saves in December.
