Washington returns to Capital One Arena and is currently in a playoff position in the Metropolitan Division, while the Leafs are struggling and hoping to move up in the standings themselves. Washington (18-11-4) enters this game after dropping three straight, including a 5-0 loss at Minnesota. The Caps have been outscored 10-1 over their last two games and have to be better on both ends of the ice. Washington’s overall home success (10-5-2) could help them to overcome their recent issues. Toronto (15-12-5) got a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over the Chicago Blackhawks in their last game. That late flourish helped them to end a two-game losing streak and the Leafs will try to get a second straight win here.
Goaltending could be a defining factor in this game. Washington’s expected starter, Logan Thompson, has had a quality season with 2.09 goals against average, making him a dependable presence in net. Toronto’s Joseph Woll returned from injury recently and made several key saves in his latest start, helping stabilize Toronto’s defense. It will be interesting to see if Woll plays or if a backup is called into action.
Offensively, the Leafs will lean heavily on Auston Matthews and William Nylander to generate scoring opportunities. Matthews continues to find the back of the net at a consistent clip, and Nylander’s playmaking ability remains crucial to Toronto’s success on the scoreboard. The Maple Leafs are playing some pretty dreadful hockey lately and I think that is going to continue in this game. I'll take the Caps to win this game on the moneyline and prolong the woes of a Toronto team that is giving up over three goals per game to this point in the year.
