Washington is coming off a solid 5‑1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, bouncing back quickly after a loss earlier in this homestand. The Caps have found scoring rhythm in recent games, producing 23 goals in their last four games. The Jets have lost two straight games, entering this road trip on shaky footing. Washington is playing better hockey of late and will try to keep it that way here.
The biggest blow for Winnipeg of late is that their goaltending star Connor Hellebuyck is sidelined for 4–6 weeks following a knee procedure. Consequently, Eric Comrie will start in net. Though Comrie has been respectable this season, the drop‑off from Hellebuyck’s elite numbers will likely be meaningful over the long haul. Washington will likely try to test him early and often, pushing traffic to create scoring chances.
On the Caps’ side, veterans such as Alexander Ovechkin still pose a scoring threat, while contributors like Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome offer secondary scoring and physical play.
