Atalanta mounted an extraordinary comeback to see off Borussia Dortmund in the previous round of the Champions League, but face the daunting proposition of in-form Bayern at Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday. This is the first time these two clubs have ever met in European competition, and the gap in current form is stark. Bayern arrive as clear favorites, riding a wave of confidence after 6 straight wins in February. Atalanta, meanwhile, have won only 1 of their last 4 matches and carry a growing injury list. The case for Bayern is strong on paper, but Atalanta have won 4 of their last 5 games against Bundesliga opposition in Europe, and home advantage in Bergamo is never to be ignored.

Atalanta arrive in poor form, depleted by injury and suspension. They are facing a Bayern side that has been one of the most impressive teams in Europe. Kompany's pressing system will cause Atalanta's midfield real problems, and without De Ketelaere supplying creativity from the right, their ability to hurt Bayern on the counter is limited.
That said, Atalanta's record against German clubs and the Gewiss Stadium atmosphere means this is unlikely to be a walk in the park for the visitors. Scamacca will work hard and Zappacosta will threaten on the overlap. Bayern should, however, secure a comfortable first leg advantage. A 3-1 Bayern win feels like the most likely single outcome, with Atalanta nicking a goal to keep the second leg interesting.
