Liverpool will host Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday at Anfield. These are two of the proudest clubs in European football, but only one of them has been playing football worth being proud of this season. Liverpool is second in the table and will try to halt a two-match domestic losing streak against a United team that enters this match in 10th place. Here, I break down this Premier League match and give you my Liverpool vs Manchester United prediction.
Liverpool are defending champions and still among the top contenders this season. But their form has wobbled of late after losses to Crystal Palace and Chelsea. Manchester United have struggled for consistency under Ruben Amorim, especially in away fixtures. They have earned just one point in three away matches and have been outscored 7-2 in those three games.
Liverpool will again be without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who has been sidelined by a hamstring injury. That means Giorgi Mamardashvili is likely to continue between the posts. Liverpool has allowed two goals in back-to-back games and they will need to tighten things up in defence if they want to avoid a third straight defeat.
United's key absence remains Lisandro Martinez, who continues recovering from a serious knee injury. But it's not clear that his presence would be enough to turn things around for Untied anyway. Amorim has emphasized the need for results regardless of backing from ownership. United did win their last match against Sunderland. But there is a huge difference between beating Sunderland at home and beating Liverpool at Anfield.
Liverpool is unbeaten across their last five league games against Manchester United. United last defeated Liverpool in a league game in 2022, though they did beat Liverpool in an FA Cup tie in 2024 as well. With United's struggles on the road this year, it would take an exceptional effort from them to end their winless run against Liverpool in the Premier League.
Liverpool has struggled of late. They have dropped three straight matches in all competitions going into this game and two straight games in the Premier League. But I think that Liverpool will end their losing streak at home against Manchester United in this match.
Manchester United's form away from Old Trafford has been downright alarming this season. That is likely to continue here against one of the best clubs in all of Europe right now. I'll back Liverpool to get the win and to put pressure on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.
