PSG, the reigning European champions, host Chelsea, the current Club World Cup holders, in a tie packed with storylines, history, and genuine uncertainty. The backdrop to this tie is fascinating. Chelsea beat PSG 3-0 in the Club World Cup final last July, a shock result that still stings in Paris. Luis Enrique's side will be looking to turn the tables on home soil, and that motivation could be decisive in the opening exchanges at the Parc des Princes.
PSG sit top of Ligue 1 and have been the dominant force in French football all season. However, their Champions League campaign has been inconsistent. They won only 1 of their last 5 UCL matches, drawing 2 and losing 2, and they were forced through the knockout play-offs after finishing outside the top 8. They got past Monaco there, but only just, winning 2-3 away and drawing 2-2 at home.

Chelsea arrive in Paris with psychological confidence but a packed schedule. Under Liam Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca earlier this season, the Blues have picked up some excellent results. Wins over Aston Villa (4-1), Hull City (4-0), and Wrexham (4-2) highlight their attacking form, though a 1-2 loss to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw with Burnley show the inconsistency that has kept them 5th in the Premier League table. Importantly, Chelsea have conceded in each of their last 4 matches, which will concern Rosenior ahead of facing the attacking quality PSG possess.
Cole Palmer was the key man for Chelsea when they demolished PSG in the Club World Cup in the summer. However, his form has been indifferent this season as he has battled fitness issues. Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho provide width and pace in transition, and have linked well with Joao Pedro in recent weeks.
