Group A is no longer a four-team race for first place. Mexico have already won the group after following their 2-0 win over South Africa with a controlled 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara. Luis Romo scored the winner after a goalkeeper error, Raul Rangel made the key late saves, and Javier Aguirre's rotated midfield did enough to keep Mexico perfect through two matches.
That changes the final-day betting picture. Mexico still play Czechia at the Azteca, but the hosts no longer need a result and could rotate before the Round of 32. Guillermo Ochoa, Santiago Gimenez, Cesar Huerta and Gilberto Mora are all names to watch if Aguirre decides to protect starters, while Raul Rangel has strengthened his case as the No. 1 after two clean sheets.
South Korea are still in control of second place, but the mood is not entirely comfortable. The 1-0 loss to Mexico came after a passive attacking display, Son Heung-min was substituted before the hour mark, and there is now a legitimate discussion over whether Oh Hyeon-gyu should start centrally against South Africa. The equation is simple: avoid defeat and South Korea finish second.
Czechia and South Africa are both alive but both are under pressure. Czechia led South Korea and South Africa, yet only collected one point from those two matches. South Africa rescued their draw with a late Teboho Mokoena penalty, but Mokoena is now out for the South Korea match and Themba Zwane remains banned after FIFA increased his suspension to three matches. Michal Sadilek's early goal looked like it would rescue their campaign, but the late penalty means they now need a result against Mexico at the Azteca. Koubek has publicly said the team must improve in possession and be braver, while Patrik Schick, Tomas Soucek and Ladislav Krejci remain the obvious routes to goal.
