The men’s ice hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milano Cortina is going to feature NHL players back in action for the first time since 2014. With star power returning to the global stage and a deep field of contenders eyeing gold, this event promises plenty of drama. The tournament begins on February 11 with all 12 teams vying for a spot in the knockout stage and culminates with the gold medal game on February 22, with the USA and Canada the favorites. Here, I analyze this tournament and make my Olympic men's hockey prediction before the games begin.

The return of NHL talent is the biggest storyline for this year’s Olympic men's hockey tournament. After a long hiatus, top-tier professionals from the world’s premier league are back, lending star power and significant depth to multiple teams. Canada’s lineup is especially impressive, featuring elite talent such as Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Macklin Celebrini, giving them perhaps the strongest offensive core in the field.
Team USA is another powerhouse, loaded with high-end forwards like Auston Matthews, Jack Hughes, and Jack Eichel. The American roster features both some established stars and emerging talent, similar to the mix of youth and experience that has made Canada look so good on paper. The United States is seeking its first Olympic men’s hockey gold since the iconic “Miracle on Ice” victory in 1980, adding extra motivation for the Americans.
European contenders are also significant storylines. Sweden remains a credible challenger with strong depth and experience. Finland enters as the defending Olympic champion from 2022 and still has a roster capable of pushing deep into the tournament, although they don't have as many big names as the North Americans. The +120 gold medal odds reflect their perceived supremacy over the rest of the world, but also represent a reasonable value when considering the depth of talent on the roster. The tandem of McDavid and MacKinnon, supported by skilled defensemen and reliable goaltending, gives Canada a balanced attack capable of overcoming any opponent. While the United States is a close second in odds and could easily vie for gold, Canada’s historic success in international play and recent performance metrics make them my top pick.
I think that Canada is worth playing at any plus price, as they won't be at plus money after much of this tournament is completed after they take care of business early on. Those who believe in the US can get them at a better price, but I think the Americans are in for an uphill battle when they meet the Canadians.
