Chicago enters the opener with one of the league’s most revamped rosters. The Sky moved aggressively in the offseason, adding experienced guards Skylar Diggins and Natasha Cloud while also bringing in versatile scorers like Rickea Jackson and DiJonai Carrington. The organization clearly believes veteran leadership can speed up their return to playoff contention after winning just 10 games last season.
Another major storyline is how quickly Portland can compete in its return to the WNBA. Expansion teams often struggle defensively early in the year because rotations and communication take time to develop. Portland does have intriguing young talent and should benefit from an energized home crowd expected to fill Moda Center for the franchise debut. It will be interesting to see if that is enough to help them here.

I think we are in for a highly competitive game between a new franchise and a new-look franchise in the WNBA. The Fire will have their share of growing pains early in the season, but a team like the Sky won't be immune to those either, given how many changes they made to their roster. I think this is a one-possession game in either direction, so I'll take the Fire as a home underdog to cover the spread in their first-ever competitive basketball game.
