What To Bet In The West Coast Conference
In the WCC, the question is always whether Gonzaga or the field will be the best option when betting on futures markets. This year, the Zags split the WCC regular season title with the Saint Mary's Gaels, with both teams going 16-2 in league play. They each got a win against each other on their home floors, with a rubber match between the two teams expected to take place on championship Tuesday night.
The play of the bigs of both teams will be the focal point if they were to meet in another WCC championship game. Both teams have a ton of size and can impact both ends of the floor drastically with it. The question will be whether Gonzaga star Graham Ike can patrol the paint while staying out of foul trouble against a Gaels team with multiple seven-footers to contend with.
This year, the WCC could be a three-bid league. It looks like Santa Clara has done enough to earn a spot in the field of 68. But they would love to make sure of that by taking down at least Saint Mary's in the semifinals, while a tournament title would eliminate all doubt about their candidacy.
Conference realignment has become a major storyline in the WCC in addition to the play on the floor. Washington State and Oregon State have joined this league after the Pac-12 was chopped up and most of its teams fled for greener pastures. But the pendulum will swing the other way for the WCC in the near future, as Gonzaga will join the Beavers and Cougars in a new version of the Pac-12 starting in 2026, which will raise questions as to whether or not Saint Mary's will join the league as a basketball-focused member at some point as well.
