With both teams out of bowl contention, this contest becomes a development opportunity for young players and a chance for both teams to play for pride against a conference rival. Bowling Green's offensive inconsistency: The Falcons have rotated quarterbacks this season and their scoring has dropped in recent weeks. The Falcons have been held to 21 or fewer points in four straight games, losing all four of those games to MAC opponents. They will try to get their act together offensively in this game against another struggling opponent.
Akron aiming to finish strong: The Zips had a two-game winning streak snapped in their last game against Kent State. That loss knocked the Zips out of bowl contention for this season. But the Zips will try to finish strong over the final couple of weeks of their season behind an offense that has shown some signs of life against MAC opponents in recent weeks.
Akron’s starter Ben Finley has been the focal point of the offense. Through 11 games he has thrown for 2,299 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Bowling Green continues to search for steadiness at quarterback. The Drew Pyne has 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on the year and backups have seen snaps as well due to injuries and performance issues. That inconsistency has made it hard for the Falcons to sustain drives and build rhythm late in games.
