The Pitt Panthers (7–3, 5–1 ACC) head to Atlanta to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9–1, 6–1 ACC) on Saturday. For Tech, a win means its first trip to the ACC Championship Game since 2014 and possibly a College Football Playoff berth. For Pitt, this game is essentially a must-win if it wants to remain in ACC championship contention. This game carries massive weight for both teams. For Georgia Tech, a victory locks up a spot in the ACC title game for the first time in over a decade. The Yellow Jackets rebounded from their first loss of the season when they beat Boston College in their last outing. Anything less than a win could derail their conference title hopes and playoff hopes. A Pitt loss would eliminate them from ACC title contention. Only with this win and a follow-up win over Miami can their ACC championship dreams continue.
The Panthers have won four of their last five trips to Atlanta, and Narduzzi is 6–2 all-time against the Jackets. Pitt knows how to handle this environment. The question will be whether or not they can make enough plays on defense to secure the win here.
Georgia Tech’s offense runs through Haynes King, who has been sensational this season. He’s thrown for over 2,200 yards while completing a high percentage of his passes. He’s more than just a pocket passer. King has just over 800 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. That dual-threat ability makes him extremely difficult to defend.
On the Pitt side, true freshman Mason Heintschel has handled the spotlight remarkably well. He’s thrown for 1,673 yards this season with 13 total touchdowns. Though he was shaky last week against Notre Dame with just 126 passing yards and one interception, Heintschel is resilient. He’ll need to bounce back and avoid mistakes to help his team stay in conference title contention.
There is a ton of pressure on both teams to perform in this game. But I think Georgia Tech will come away with a win in this matchup, covering the spread at home and punching its ticket to the ACC title game. Expect a big game from Haynes King here, as he will lead his team to a big win.
