The SMU Mustangs will go to Chestnut Hill to face the Boston College Eagles in college football action on Saturday. The Mustangs are coming off an upset win at home over the Miami Hurricanes and will try to avoid an emotional letdown this week against a Boston College team just playing for pride at this point in the year. SMU upset a ranked Miami team at home last week. The Mustangs have a 4-1 record in ACC play and they are still in the hunt to make it to the ACC championship game. Boston College is in a freefall this season. They are 1-8 overall and 0-5 in conference games, making this a must-win for morale if nothing else.
SMU has been known for its high-powered offense in recent years. But it has been the defense of the Mustangs that has helped them to contend for a second straight trip to the ACC title game. They allow only 21.2 points per contest. They will like their chances to have another great game on defense against a Boston College offense that has struggled mightily this season.
BC comes into this game averaging 24.9 points per game. That number is a bit misleading, as they scored 106 points in their first two games. Since those two games, the Eagles have averaged just 16.9 points per game and they could struggle to generate points again here.
SMU's Kevin Jennings stands out as a reliable and explosive quarterback. His passing production stands at 2,484 yards, 18 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. That places him among the more efficient quarterbacks in the ACC. Boston College's Grayson James is still settling into being the quarterback on Chestnut Hill. His QBR sits at 58.4 and turnovers have been a recurring issue.

SMU will have to be diligent to avoid a letdown in this game after their monumental performance against Miami last week. But I think they will do a good job of avoiding an upset in this contest against a Boston College team whose offense has just fallen apart after a productive start to the season. I'm going to lay the points with SMU in this matchup, as they should keep their ACC title hopes alive and well by improving to 5-1 in conference play.
