The Western Michigan Broncos (6–4, 5–1 MAC) look to move closer to the MAC title game when they visit the Northern Illinois Huskies (3–7, 2–4 MAC) on Tuesday night. The Broncos are favored to win this game on the road, but they will have to avoid the pressure of the moment to get a win in this matchup. The biggest storyline going into this game is the MAC championship race. Western Michigan enters this week at the top of the MAC standings with a conference record of 5-1. As long as they keep winning games, they will be in the MAC championship game. But losses would open the door for other teams to overtake them, so we should expect a focused and motivated Broncos team here.
Northern Illinois arrives in DeKalb with something to prove. With just three wins on the season and bowl eligiblity out of reach, they attempt to finish strong even if they have nothing to play for from a bowl season standpoint. The Huskies have won two of their last three games and will try to keep their mini-hot streak going with a win here.
For Western Michigan, Broc Lowry is the engine of the offense from the quarterback position. He’s thrown for 1,440 yards while also rushing for 683 yards and scoring 9 rushing touchdowns. His ability to extend plays and pick up yards with his feet gives WMU a more unpredictable offense.
Northern Illinois runs the offense through Josh Holst, who has completed 134 of 207 passes for 689 yards, 4 passing touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. His production has been limited this season and he will try to deliver at home against an upper-echelon MAC team here.
Western Michigan is playing much better football than Northern Illinois right now and the Broncos have more to play for as well. As long as they can avoid buckling under the pressure of playing for a conference title game berth, we should see the Broncos get the job done in this matchup.
