Charlotte’s edge is mostly structural. Even after a rough 2025, the 49ers had the better offensive and defensive yardage efficiency baseline than a Citadel team that has already shown early trouble against a comparable level of opponent. Charlotte’s offense averaged 14.3 points per game last season, but that still comes with a deeper passing game and a far stronger overall efficiency profile than The Citadel’s early-season data suggests. The Bulldogs also allowed 341 total yards in Week 1, which is a dangerous sign against an FBS team that should control field position and possess the ball more often. The total is a little trickier, because Charlotte is not built like an explosive over machine. That said, The Citadel’s game against Wofford produced 56 total points, and both teams showed enough defensive leakage to make a low 40s finish more plausible than a true shootout. The best market edge is Charlotte against the spread, while the under becomes playable only if the number rises above the current low- to mid-40s range.
Charlotte enters with the more stable FBS foundation, even if the 2025 record was poor. The 49ers finished that season at 1-11 and averaged 14.3 points, 285.75 total yards, 4.61 yards per play, 204.0 passing yards per game, and 81.75 rushing yards per game. Defensively, they allowed 36.3 points, 471.92 yards, 6.39 yards per play, 271.67 passing yards, and 200.25 rushing yards per game. That profile says Charlotte was limited, but not completely overmatched by the standards of this game. The Citadel’s current sample is small, but it is also revealing. In its opener, the Bulldogs scored 14 points, totaled 351 yards, posted 5.1 yards per play, and generated 227 rushing yards with only 124 passing yards. Defensively, they allowed 42 points, 341 total yards, 6.0 yards per play, 181 passing yards, and 160 rushing yards. That is enough offense to avoid a complete collapse, but not enough defensive resistance to make Charlotte’s favorite number feel inflated.
Charlotte should win comfortably at home, and the most reasonable projection is a 31-13 result. The 49ers have the better efficiency baseline, The Citadel just allowed 42 points in its opener, and Charlotte’s defense should be good enough to create separation without needing a track meet. The strongest betting angle is Charlotte -15.5, while the total projects a little below the market, making the under viable only if the best available price is near the current mid-40s range.
