The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians will meet in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card playoffs on Wednesday afternoon. Game 1 was a pitcher’s duel, but it swung Detroit’s way when Tarik Skubal struck out 14 in a 2–1 Tigers win. Cleveland is now staring down elimination at home and they will try to avoid being swept in this series between AL Central rivals. After Skubal’s dominance in Game 1, the pitching matchup going into this game should be about even. Tanner Bibee of the Guardians has had his ups and downs but was strong down the stretch, especially at home, and has the ability to limit hard contact. In his final four starts of the regular season, he gave up just four total runs in 27.2 innings.
Detroit's Casey Mize has been more volatile of late. His road ERA this season is slightly worse than his home splits, and he struggled in his last 13 starts with a 5.54 ERA in that stretch. The question is whether he can find his command and limit mistakes in a game where every pitch is likely to matter like we saw in a low-scoring Game 1.
The Tigers limped into the playoffs after a brutal September. But they have won three of their last five games and will try to get a series-clinching victory in this matchup. The Guardians had a two-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday and are now on the brink of elimination.

Losing Game 1 was certainly disappointing to the Guardians. But that was the game they were expected to lose in this series with Skubal on the mound for the Tigers. Now that they have survived Skubal, the Guardians should regain the advantage in Game 2. I'll take the Guardians to do just enough offensively to avoid a sweep and set up a deciding Game 3.
