The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks will close out their three-game set on Thursday in Phoenix. The Dodgers are closing in on clinching the NL West, while Arizona is still fighting for the last National League Wild Card spot. Both teams will try to sort out their pitching situation after an extra-inning game on Wednesday. Here, I break down this matchup and give you my Dodgers vs Diamondbacks prediction for today.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto enters with the clear edge in this starting pitching matchup. He has posted a 2.58 ERA, struck out 194 batters, and maintained an elite 0.99 WHIP this season. His consistency all year has made him L.A.’s most reliable starter.
Zac Gallen’s 4.70 ERA and 1.24 WHIP reflect a season of highs and lows for the Diamondbacks ace. He has delivered strong stretches and he is 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA over seven recent outings. But he remains vulnerable to the Dodgers’ top hitters when he inevitably makes mistakes. The Dodgers also have a larger margin for error thanks to their bullpen depth and their offense behind Yamamoto.
The Dodgers won Wednesday’s extra-innings thriller, moving them closer to the NL West title. They are 3-2 in their last three games. Arizona pulled one game out in this series already and will continue to fight for survival in the Wild Card race. The D-backs had a three-game winning streak snapped in their loss on Wednesday night.

Both teams have plenty to play for as the regular season winds down. But I think that the Dodgers have the advantage coming into this contest in Phoenix. Yamamoto gives the Dodgers reliability on the mound that the Diamondbacks just don't have with Gallen at this point in time. I'll go with the Dodgers to win the rubber match in this series and to go three games up on the Padres and lock up the NL West title when all is said and done.
