San Diego heads into Sunday night looking for a sweep after taking the first two games of the series in Seattle. The Padres have already gone 5-0 against the Mariners this season and continue to get strong pitching, timely hitting, and steady late-inning relief work against them. Seattle enters the finale of this Padres vs Mariners series trying to avoid another frustrating offensive showing against one of the better pitching staffs in baseball.
George Kirby has been Seattle’s most reliable starter this season. The right-hander enters with a 5-2 record and a 2.84 ERA while limiting walks at an elite rate. Kirby attacks the strike zone early and rarely gives hitters free passes, which keeps Seattle competitive even when the offense cools off. His ability to work deep into games is a major factor for a Mariners club that has leaned heavily on its bullpen in recent weeks.
Giolito is making his first appearance of the season for San Diego. It will be interesting to see how he performs in his first action of the 2026 campaign. And while San Diego has a slightly higher team ERA than the Mariners this season, you wouldn't know it from the games that these two teams have played agianst each other this year.
Seattle’s offense has lacked consistency, especially with injuries affecting the middle of the lineup. Giolito’s strikeout ability creates problems for a Mariners club that already swings and misses at a high rate. With San Diego carrying the hotter bullpen and entering with confidence after two straight wins in Seattle, the value sits on the underdog price as far as I'm concerned. I'll take the Padres to complete a season sweep of the Mariners before moving onto bigger and better things this season.
