The Oklahoma City Thunder head to Los Angeles on Saturday night holding a 2-0 lead over the Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals. Oklahoma City has looked every bit like the defending NBA champions through the opening two games of this series, winning both games by 18 points. The Thunder continue to get elite production from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and one of the deepest benches left in the postseason. Los Angeles now returns home facing major pressure, especially with Luka Doncic still sidelined and LeBron James carrying a heavy workload. Oklahoma City enters Game 3 unbeaten in the postseason and has overwhelmed the Lakers with athleticism and bench production. In Game 2, the Thunder reserves outscored the Lakers' bench 48-20, a major edge that continues to swing the series. Even with Gilgeous-Alexander limited by foul trouble, Oklahoma City still won comfortably thanks to balanced scoring and strong defense.
The Los Angeles Lakers badly need a faster start and more support around LeBron James. Austin Reaves bounced back with 31 points in Game 2 after struggling in the opener, but Los Angeles still allowed Oklahoma City to dominate the third quarter. The Lakers also continue to struggle on the glass and have had issues containing Holmgren around the rim.
Another concern for Los Angeles is fatigue. James continues to log heavy minutes, and the Lakers have relied heavily on their starters throughout the playoffs. Oklahoma City, meanwhile, has consistently received quality minutes from multiple role players, helping keep the pressure on opponents for all 48 minutes.
Los Angeles should play with greater urgency at home, and the crowd at Crypto.com Arena could help the Lakers stay competitive early. Reaves has regained confidence offensively, and James is still capable of carrying stretches of a playoff game. Still, the overall gap between these teams has been obvious through two games.
Oklahoma City has more depth, fresher legs, better defense, and far more balance. Holmgren continues creating matchup problems inside, while Gilgeous-Alexander controls the flow whenever he is on the floor. The Thunder also continue generating major contributions from their second unit, an area where the Lakers have struggled badly. Because of all that, I'll lay the points with the Thunder in Game 3.
