The Edmonton Oilers will hit the road to take on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. These teams have each split their games to start this season. Edmonton enters as a slight favorite on the road before this contest. Here, I break down this matchup on the ice and give you my Oilers vs Rangers prediction for Tuesday's game.
The Oilers enter at 1-0-1 and are riding momentum after a 3-1 win over Vancouver. They got contributions from Andrew Mangiapane, Noah Philp, and a late empty net goal by Leon Draisaitl. Edmonton’s consistency on offense has been there early this season, as they have scored three goals in each of their first two games.
The Rangers are 2-2 and are trying to find some consistency early in the year. They were shut out 1-0 at home by Washington in their most recent outing. That shutout loss came after they scored 10 goals in the two games prior. New York will try to get its attack back on track in this game.
Calvin Pickard and Stuard Skinner have split the goaltending duties for Edmonton so far this season. Pickard was better than Skinner in their season debuts and it will be interesting to see how the Oilers approach this game from a goaltending standpoint.
New York will go with Igor Shesterkin in net. Shesterkin has posted a dazzling 0.67 GAA and a .976 save percentage in three games. Shesterkin’s early-season form gives the Rangers a backbone in net that can give them the edge in tight games and shootouts.
Leon Draisaitl continues to lead the way for Edmonton. He already has three points (two goals, one assist) to start the season. Connor McDavid is always a threat alongside Draisaitl. He has three assists on the season so far.
Rangers defenseman Adam Fox has provided offensive contributions early, with three goals to lead the Rangers. Artemi Panarin remains a dangerous scorer who can break games open in a hurry. And Sam Carrick has logged three assists already this year for New York.

This should be a close game at Madison Square Garden. But the Oilers have the edge in terms of their offensive upside. Draisaitl and McDavid should be able to lead the Oilers to a win on the road here to get a second win in a row and send the Rangers under the .500 mark for the year.
