The Florida Panthers head to the Utah Mammoth’s home ice on Wednesday night, and this non-conference showdown at Delta Center promises to be a competitive game. Both teams are around the .500 mark for the season and one of them will get an important win here. Florida comes in on a high after a dramatic 7–6 overtime win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, with veteran contributors stepping up when it mattered. They followed that up with a 4-1 win over the New York Islanders, but the Panthers are back on the road here and will have to sustain their recent level of play to get a third straight win. Utah is coming off a 4–2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, and they have dropped two straight games coming into this contest.
Utah’s defensive numbers show they allow 2.9 goals per game this season. Their penalty kill is respectable (82.4%), but their power play ranks near the bottom of the NHL (15.1%). That spells opportunity for a veteran, offensively-skilled squad like Florida’s. That could mean pressure on Karel Vejmelka of the Mammoth to slow them down in net. Florida will have to choose between Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov on the other side.
For Utah, young forward Logan Cooley leads the club with 14 goals and remains the Mammoth’s top finisher. Leading the Utah offense is Clayton Keller, who leads their playmaking arm with 18 assists and 28 points. On the Panthers’ side, veteran winger Brad Marchand has raised the bar. He’s at 16 goals and 31 points this season and leads the Panthers in both goals and assists.
