Both teams are on the outside looking in when it comes to the Eastern Conference playoff race and each will be aiming to build momentum in the standings as the season reaches its midpoint. Boston enters this game with a 23‑19‑2 record and has won three of its last four games. New York is similarly middling at 20‑19‑6 but boasts a stronger defensive goals against average this season. Despite that, the Rangers have lost four of their last five. In games where the Rangers manage at least one power play goal, they have gone 8‑2‑2, and as a road side they have compiled a 15‑8‑2 record which makes them a more dangerous opponent away from Madison Square Garden. Their last outing saw them suffer a 5‑2 defeat to the Buffalo Sabres.
Igor Shesterkin is injured for the Rangers, which should mean Jonathan Quick in goal for the blueshirts. Quick has solid numbers, especially for a backup, but this still isn't an ideal situation for New York. Boston’s defensive numbers indicate they allow over three goals per game, which could be problematic against a Rangers squad that has the ability to score in bunches. It will be up to Jeremy Swayman to slow them down here.
For the Bruins, Pavel Zacha has been a consistent point producer with 10 goals and 18 assists, and David Pastrnak has contributed six goals and five assists over his last 10 outings. The Rangers are led by Artemi Panarin, who has tallied 16 goals and 32 assists, and Vincent Trocheck, who has also shown scoring consistency in recent games. Mika Zibanejad’s performance earlier in the season against Boston demonstrates his ability to exploit their defensive gaps as well.

This matchup should be a tight battle between two Original Six rivals with contrasting strengths. Boston’s ability to generate offense at a respectable clip is counterbalanced by defensive lapses that New York can exploit, particularly with its power play. At the end of the day, I think the Bruins will secure the win on home ice, but neither team has justified much confidence over the course of the 2025-26 season.
