Pittsburgh enters this contest having won their last game over the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout. That win snapped an eight-game losing streak and the Pens will try to build on that victory by closing out their pre-holiday schedule with a victory this afternoon.
Toronto has been struggling of late, having lost three games in a row entering this matchup. The Leafs have been struggling both offensively and defensively, being outscored 14-4 during their three-game losing streak. The question now is whether the Leafs can recover and get a win before the multi-day rest period.
The goaltending situation for Pittsburgh is unsettled due to injuries and trades this season. We should see Stuart Skinner in net for this matchup, whose GAA is just under 3.00 for the season. Toronto’s crease is likely to be occupied by Joseph Woll, who has a 2.46 GAA and has been solid during his starts this season so far.
Sidney Crosby is carrying the Penguins offensively of late, especially with Evgeni Malkin out of action. Crosby has 20 goals and 17 assists this season and any contributions from him would be huge in this contest. Toronto's most important players are William Nylander and John Taveres. Nylander is up to 25 assists on the season and his ability to set up others will be instrumental to the success of the Leafs.

This game should be a competitive contest between two teams that could desperately use a win after some recent woes. I'll take the Maple Leafs to get that win, as they should finally find some offense against a Penguins team that is allowing over three goals per game.
