The San Jose Sharks and Utah Mammoth will meet in a Western Conference matchup in the NHL on Friday night. The Sharks are winless on the season so far despite being competitive in several games. Utah is .500 on the season and they will try to get a win at home as a favorite to improve to 3-2. The Sharks have had a rocky start. They lost a pair of overtime games to the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks to start their season. Most recently, they were beaten 5–1 by the Carolina Hurricanes. San Jose has scored effectively in most of their games, but they have been dreadful on defense and will try to reverse that trend tonight.
Utah has split their first four games of the season. But they won their home opener on Wednesday night, beating the Calgary Flames by a score of 3-1. Utah's offense has been a major concern, scoring just two goals per game. But they have also allowed just two goals per game and they will try to lock down the Sharks with their defense here.
San Jose forwards like Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith have generated some buzz. But no players have scored more than two goals on the season for the Sharks at this point. Veterans like Tyler Toffoli and Jeff Skinner can still contribute, but the Sharks need someone to step up and take over that primary scoring role.
Utah’s offense has been spread out as well, with no player scoring more than two goals. Barrett Hayton, JJ Peterka, and Kevin Stenlund were the goal scorers in the win over Calgary on Wednesday. Dylan Guenther leads the team with four total points, including two assists.

Both of these teams have struggled to score goals early in the season. But someone has to do enough scoring to get a win in this game. I think it will be Utah, as they are attempting to score against a Sharks team that is vastly inferior on defense. I'll lay the puckline with the Mammoth, as they should improve to 2-0 on home ice.
