The Jets are 1–1 to open the season, bouncing back from a loss to Dallas by beating the Kings 3–2. Mark Scheifele scored twice and Connor Hellebuyck turned aside 30 shots in Winnipeg's first win of the season. The Jets' defense bounced back nicely from their struggles in their season opener and they will try to build on that in this contest.
The Islanders are 0–2 to start the year. Their most recent outing was a 4–2 home loss to Washington, in which top draft pick Matthew Schaefer scored his first NHL goal. Isles goaltender Ilya Sorokin allowed four goals on 29 shots in that contest. Turnovers and a shaky defense were costly and the Islanders need to get better in those areas to avoid a third straight loss.
Connor Hellebuyck is likely to get the nod in goal for Winnipeg. His save percentage sits at .899 in early play, and while his GAA is a bit bloated early, he’s an elite netminder who the Jets will lean on to contend for a title this year.
