Both of these teams have split their first two games and will try to get a win to move above the .500 mark early in the season. Detroit beat Toronto in their first meeting of the season and will look for a repeat performance here. Detroit bounced back from a rough opener against Montreal by handling Toronto convincingly on Saturday. That was the Red Wings’ first win of the season and it was a very promising sign for the Wings' attack. Detroit will try to prove it can do something similar on the road in this contest.
Toronto will be coming in with some urgency. They opened with a win over Montreal but failed to sustain that momentum in Detroit. Toronto coach Craig Berube lamented that the Leafs beat themselves in that game, citing a weak second period. The Leafs must be sharper to avoid a second straight loss to the Red Wings.
Goaltending is a key question going into this game. Detroit’s summer addition, John Gibson, struggled in his debut and was pulled after allowing five goals on 13 shots. Cam Talbot got the nod Saturday, stopping 20 of 23 shots and earning an assist on Edvinsson’s empty-netter. Detroit may roll with Talbot again, given his more consistent early work.
The Leafs have Anthony Stolarz between the pipes. After allowing three goals in Detroit, his record is 1–1–0 with a GAA of 3.05 and save percentage of .906. Toronto’s goaltending remains a work in progress and Stolarz will try to impress in this early-season rematch.
Detroit has leaned on a few standout names early. Patrick Kane leads the team with one goal and three assists for a total of four points. Lucas Raymond scored twice Saturday, including his 100th NHL career goal. Alex DeBrincat contributed three assists. All of those players will need to have good games to keep the Wings in this contest.
Toronto has Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Morgan Rielly as its backbone. Along with that veteran talent, 20-year-old Easton Cowan is expected to make his NHL debut on Monday, slotted on the top line with Matthews and Knies. That infusion of youth and energy could wake up Toronto’s attack.
