The Olympic women’s 10km + 10km skiathlon in Milan–Cortina is the opening event in cross-country skiing at these games, scheduled to take place on February 7 at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium. With the race combining both classic and freestyle techniques over a demanding 20km course, this event will test stamina and race strategy. Sweden has its sights set on a podium sweep in this event, but an experienced American skier will try to crash the party. One of the major storylines of this year’s women’s skiathlon is Jessie Diggins’ bid for individual Olympic gold in her final Games. Entering the event as the top-ranked woman in distance skiing, she won the skiathlon at a World Cup event in Trondheim late in the season and showcased consistent podium form. She is a legitimate gold medal threat going into this race. Her run in the Tour de Ski and recent 20km podium finishes further support her credentials as one of the frontrunners.
Sweden’s Jonna Sundling and Ebba Andersson form a powerful Scandinavian duo. Sundling, traditionally known as a sprint specialist, has continued to demonstrate endurance strength in classic and freestyle formats. Andersson has been a perennial podium presence on the World Cup circuit with strong results across multiple distance events. Frida Karlsson and Moa Ilar are also firmly in medal contention for Sweden going into this race.
Another compelling storyline is Norway’s Heidi Weng, whose career includes multiple World Cup victories and a history of strong skiathlon results. Although her odds are slightly longer than the Swedish and American favorites, Weng’s experience makes her a potential dark horse capable of moving into one of the podium positions.

Any of the top three names on the odds list for this race could end up being the winner. I do think that there is a possibility that teamwork becomes a factor in this race, as four Swedish skiers being among the gold medal favorites could result in them teaming up to keep Diggins out of reach. I'll go with Andersson to claim the gold here, but any of the Swedes or Diggins could realistically do what it takes to stand atop the podium when all is said and done.
