Connecticut enters as a dominant team both nationally and in the Big East, with a 10-game win streak and top-tier defense that limits opponents to around 61 points per game. The Huskies have have won each of their first four conference games by double-digits and will try to extend that streak in this matchup in Rhode Island. A central storyline is the performance of forward Tarris Reed Jr., who has shown the ability to control the paint and impact both ends of the floor. Reed’s production will be critical against Providence’s interior defenders.
Providence is striving to climb up the conference standings after a shocking win over St. John’s. The Friars are led by Big East scoring leader Jason Edwards, a guard capable of creating offense and putting pressure on UConn’s perimeter defense. Big man Oswin Erhunmwunse provides a rim presence with the most blocks in conference play. Despite these assets, consistency has been an issue for Providence, especially against top-tier defenses like the one that UConn brings into this game.
This is a big game for both of these teams, but Providence certainly needs it more than UConn.
