Coastal Carolina’s season has been a rollercoaster, finishing 6-6 and struggling late with a three-game losing streak to close the regular season. The Chanticleers have displayed inconsistency on both offense and defense, ranking poorly in yardage metrics on both sides of the ball. The Chants will try to finish their season on a high note by earning a win that would get them above the .500 mark for the year despite the fact that they fired their head coach before bowl season.
Louisiana Tech enjoyed a 7-5 campaign, capped by consecutive wins and its first winning season since 2019. The Bulldogs’ defense has been solid, especially against the run, and their offense has averaged 38 points per game over the final two games of the regular season, with dynamic contributions from backup quarterback Trey Kukuk helping them to reach bowl season.
Quarterback situations on both sides will figure prominently in the outcome of this game. Coastal Carolina has dealt with uncertainty at the quarterback position, with Samari Collier’s status uncertain after missing late-season action due to injury. Tad Hudson has thrown four touchdown passes and five interceptions on the season in his place.
For Louisiana Tech, the quarterback in this game will likely be Trey Kukuk. Kukuk has not lit up scoreboards through the air, but his mobility has generated production over the last couple of weeks of the regular season. His legs could be a key factor against a Coastal Carolina defense that has allowed rushing yardage in chunks all season.
Score Projection: Louisiana Tech 31 – Coastal Carolina 20
Win Probability: Louisiana Tech 72%, Coastal Carolina 28%
I'm going to take the over in the Independence Bowl between Coastal Carolina and Louisiana Tech. The Chanticleers have been a mess on defense late in the season and that should continue, even against a backup quarterback for the Bulldogs. The Chants should do enough on offense to help us reach this total, even with Coastal Carolina being in disarray on multiple fronts.
