The Tennessee Volunteers and Illinois Fighting Illini will meet on Tuesday in the Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl. Both teams enter this contest with identical 8-4 records after solid seasons that ended without playoff appearances. They will look to finish the season on a high note in Nashville, with Tennessee a slight favorite in this contest in their home state. Tennessee and Illinois both finished the regular season with 8-4 records, but their paths were different in meaningful ways. Tennessee is ranked #23 in the AP poll and had lofty goals early in the season before losses to high-end competition like Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Vanderbilt. The Volunteers have one of the highest scoring offenses in the country, averaging over 40 points per game and almost 500 yards per game of total offense. Their ability to generate yards both through the air and on the ground makes them a difficult team to contain.
Illinois has been solid this season but less explosive. They have a balanced attack that has had its moments but lacks the same level of elite playmakers that Tennessee has at the skill positions. Illinois had just two wins away from home this season, one against Purdue and one against eventual ACC champions Duke.
Both teams are dealing with notable opt-outs for NFL draft preparation, which could affect their depth and execution. Tennessee will be without key defensive pieces like Joshua Josephs and others, while Illinois loses its best pass rusher and a starting offensive tackle.
Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar leads the Vols' offense with prolific passing numbers, having thrown for over 3,400 yards and 24 touchdowns. Aguilar’s ability to stretch the field and make big plays will be central to the Volunteers’ success, especially in third-down situations where Tennessee converts at a high rate.
Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer has had a strong season too, completing over 68% of his passes for 2,811 yards and 21 touchdowns. Altmyer’s experience and accuracy give the Fighting Illini a chance to sustain drives and keep pace with Tennessee, but inconsistent protection may limit his impact against an SEC defense capable of creating pressure.

It's pretty incredible that Tennessee's losses came exclusively to teams that are in the top-15 in the country. Illinois does not belong to that group and we should see the Vols have success against the Illini, especially in what is basically a home game in the state of Tennessee.
