The Eagles and Mountaineers share a rivalry that dates back over two decades, and this bowl game adds another chapter in a series where both programs fight for pride in the Sun Belt. Georgia Southern finished the regular season at 6-6, securing bowl eligibility and a chance to make a statement in postseason play. The Eagles won three of their final four games in the regular season, including one over App State.
Appalachian State arrives with a losing record this season, but the Mountaineers answered the call at 5-7 after so many teams with six or more wins opted out of bowl season. That sets up this rematch against the Eagles. Their earlier meeting saw Georgia Southern prevail 25-23 in Boone, a win that demonstrated the Eagles’ ability to build a lead and hold off a late surge, led by quarterback JC French IV’s accurate passing and a balanced offensive effort.
Quarterback play will likely be a key to this game. Georgia Southern’s JC French IV has been a productive passer throughout the season. He is 242 yards away from 3,000 passing yards and he has formed a potent connection with receiver Camden Brown, who has over 1,000 receiving yards and leads the Sun Belt in touchdown receptions with 14. The Eagles’ aerial attack will be especially important with running back OJ Howard injured.
On the other side, Appalachian State’s quarterback situation has been uncertain, with reports indicating potential opt-outs for both AJ Swann and JJ Kohl. Both of those quarterbacks are in the transfer portal and they might not play here. That could effectively neuter the offense of the Mountaineers, but we're not sure if either QB will suit up for sure.
Score Projection: Georgia Southern 31 – Appalachian State 24
Win Probability: Georgia Southern 68%, Appalachian State 32%
This game could come down to the quarterback situation for App State. And while I think Georgia Southern will get a win to close their season above .500, I am going to take the points with App State, with the expectation that they finish this game within one possession of their conference rivals in Birmingham.
