The New Mexico State Aggies (3-2) will face the Liberty Flames (2-4) on Tuesday night in a Conference USA clash. Liberty is favored by double digits, but both teams are 1-1 in conference play and this matchup has the potential to be more evenly matched than anticipated. Both of these teams come into this game having won in their last game. New Mexico State defeated Sam Houston at home in their last contest. Liberty won at UTEP in a low-scoring game. Liberty had lost four games in a row prior to that victory, while the Aggies snapped a two-game winning streak with their win. One of these teams will go from being on a losing streak to winning a second game in a row.
New Mexico State enters this game with a rest advantage after an idle week this past week. They do have to hit the road to play this game well over 1,000 miles from home. But the extra week to prepare could help offset some of the travel-related issues associated with playing in a conference with such a huge geographic footprint.
Liberty has played just two of its six games at home so far this season. They beat FCS Maine at home in their opener before losing at home to Jacksonville State a few weeks later. The Flames are searching for their first home win against an FBS opponent this year.
New Mexico State quarterback Logan Fife has been quietly one of the more efficient passers in Conference USA. Through five games, he has completed 57.2% of his passes for 1,272 yards and six touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown in the Sam Houston win. Fife will need to be accurate and avoid adding to his four interceptions for the season if NMSU wants to contend here.
Liberty's Ethan Vasko has thrown for 1,006 yards this season with six touchdown passes and three interceptions. He hasn't thrown a touchdown pass or an interception in two straight games and will try to connect on some passing scores to help his team win this game.
Liberty should be able to win this game on their home turf. But I am going to take the points with New Mexico State in this contest. The Aggies have the edge in terms of quarterback play and the Flames have not done much to prove themselves against FBS competition this year. This game could come down to the wire in Conference USA.
