The Tar Heels enter this game under heavy scrutiny on and off the field after a rocky start, while Cal wants to prove it can sustain consistency in its second ACC season. Bill Belichick’s first season in college football continues to draw scrutiny. The Tar Heels have lost three games by a combined 87 points and there are rumors that he is already on his way out in Chapel Hill. The bye week gave them a chance to regroup, but questions remain about everything surrounding their program right now.
Cal, meanwhile, enters this game with confidence. The Golden Bears are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in ACC play and have shown an ability to produce enough offense to stay in games for the most part. Their defense has held opponents to 22.5 points per game and their pass rush has created pressure from multiple angles. Cal’s red zone offense has been efficient and they will try to keep that going here.
North Carolina’s offense has struggled. They rank among the least productive passing teams in the country. If the Tar Heels want to end their current two-game losing streak, they will need to get their passing game going.
Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has thrown for 1,487 yards, nine touchdowns, and seven interceptions for Cal. His ability to protect the ball will be key as turnovers might be the only way for North Carolina to stay in this contest.
North Carolina’s Gio Lopez and Max Johnson have combined for 808 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions. The Tar Heels need to find a way to generate more offense to avoid a third straight loss.

Cal should roll at home in this contest against a North Carolina program that is falling apart before our eyes. As long as Cal can avoid turning the ball over and giving North Carolina extra chances to beat them, I don't see the Tar Heels hanging around in this one. I recommend laying the points with Cal at home here, as the tenure of Bill Belichick will only continue to look worse.
