The Tulane Green Wave and Memphis Tigers will battle in what is turning into one of the marquee matchups of the week in college football. Both teams have just one loss in American Athletic Conference play this season and the winner will help their chances of making the AAC championship game. Memphis has built a top-tier offense in the AAC this season. The Tigers are averaging 37.7 points per game and 429.2 yards of total offense (ranked 36th in FBS). Their rushing attack is a major strength, putting up 200.6 rushing yards per game (26th in FBS). Memphis will try to use their running game to wear down the Tulane defense in this matchup.
Tulane is not as flashy as Memphis offensively. They average 25.9 points scored per game and give up 25.5 points per game on defense. The narrative around Tulane this season has been one of under-achievement offensively relative to expectations. They scored near 35 points per game last year and have not come close to that despite bringing in Jake Retzlaff to play quarterback.
Tulane suffered its first AAC loss of the season in its last game. They gave up 48 points and lost by double-digits on the road against UTSA. The Green Wave is now 3-1 in the AAC and needs to get back into the win column to avoid being in a bad spot in the AAC title game chase. Memphis has won two games in a row, including an impressive win over South Florida. The Tigers are 4-1 in the AAC this season and they are surely regretting getting tripped up by UAB a few weeks ago.
Memphis quarterback Brendon Lewis has been the catalyst for their offense. He has thrown for over 1,800 yards and has added over 500 rushing yards this season. Tulane's Jake Retzlaff is also a dual-threat quarterback. He leads the Green Wave in both passing and rushing and has shown big-play potential both this year and at BYU in years past.
Score Projection: Memphis 34 – Tulane 27
Win Probability: Memphis 65%, Tulane 35%
My best bet for this huge AAC matchup is for Tulane and Memphis to combine to go over the total of 54.5 points. Both of these offenses have strengths that will make them hard to stop in this game. Look for those strengths to bring us plenty of points in a game that should come down to the wire between AAC title contenders.
