The upcoming NFC South showdown between the Carolina Panthers (5-5) and the Atlanta Falcons (3-6) on Sunday is a huge game in that division. Carolina is playing .500 football this season and is in playoff contention in the NFC. They will try to get an important win against a Falcons team that has fallen apart in recent weeks. Here, I break down this NFC South contest and give you my Panthers vs Falcons prediction for Sunday afternoon.
There’s plenty to unpack ahead of this NFC South clash. Carolina enters at 5-5 and is one game back of the final playoff spot in the NFC entering Week 11. Atlanta’s 3-6 mark and four straight losses have intensified the pressure on the home side. The Panthers shut out the Falcons 30-0 earlier this season and Atlanta would love nothing more than to get revenge on its home turf this week.
The play of the Falcons last week was encouraging. Michael Penix made a key late drive to force overtime, though the Falcons gave up a touchdown to Jonathan Taylor in the extra period to drop the game. Atlanta's defense has given up nearly 30 points per game over its last three games, but the Falcons will be in a good spot if Penix continues to play the way he did last week.
Carolina is coming off a disappointing outing, losing 17-7 to the Saints, showing a lack of offensive rhythm that must be addressed. Now they go on the road, where they have a losing record, in an attempt to get back into the win column and back above the .500 mark.
Panthers QB Bryce Young has thrown for 1,514 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions so far this season. He’ll need to avoid costly mistakes this week to punish the struggling defense of the Falcons. Carolina’s red-zone pass rate is among the league’s highest, while Atlanta’s completion rate allowed in the red zone is one of the worst.
Penix has thrown for 1,807 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions this year. His ability to lead a comeback was on full display last week and he will try to build on that this week.
I'm taking the points with Carolina this week. I don't want to overreact to Carolina's loss to the Saints last week and am concerned about the Falcons having to travel back from Europe as well. This should be a field goal game in either direction on Sunday afternoon in the ATL.
