This NFC West clash is significant on several fronts. Both the Rams and Seahawks sit at 11-3, tied atop the division and jockeying not just for the division title but for playoff seeding. The winner of this game will sit atop the division standings and the NFC as a whole, while the loser will drop into fifth place in the NFC standings as a Wild Card team.
One major storyline is the uncertain status of Rams star wide receiver Davante Adams, who aggravated a hamstring injury late in their win over the Lions and has missed practice time this week. His potential absence could hurt Los Angeles’ efficient passing attack and give the advantage to Seattle’s defense.
Of course, Seattle's defense hasn't needed any help to have an advantage in most games. The Seahawks are allowing 17.3 points per game. This could be their biggest test of the season against a Rams team that is averaging an impressive 30 points per game.
The quarterback matchup could be the deciding factor in this contest. Matt Stafford is having an MVP-level campaign for the Rams. He has 37 touchdown passes and just 5 interceptions going into the biggest game of their season. Adams’s availability could impact the vertical passing game Stafford will have to overcome him not being 100%.
Seattle’s Sam Darnold has 22 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions this season. He has a documented history of losing important games like this one. But if he can just avoid making a ton of mistakes and let the defense of the Seahawks do the work, he could lead his team to a victory in this matchup.
Score Projection: Rams 24 – Seahawks 21
Win Probability: Rams 52%, Seahawks 48%
This NFC West matchup is one of the most important games of the season. As far as the outcome is concerned, I lean toward the Rams to get the win on the road. Stafford is much more reliable through the air than Darnold and that should help make the difference, with or without Adams on the field.
