Cal comes into this game one win away from securing six wins and bowl eligibility for the season. They will try to get that win over a Virginia Tech team desperate to stop a two-game losing streak. Cal is off to a solid start at 5-2, with a 2-1 record in conference play. They’ve leaned heavily on the passing game with freshman quarterback Jaron‑Keawe Sagapolutele, who has thrown for 1,696 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions so far this season. Virginia Tech has had a rough campaign at 2-5 and 1-2 in the ACC. The Hokies have changed coaches mid-season and are attempting to rally under new leadership.
This game will be an interesting test for Cal on the road. The Golden Bears have a winning record in ACC play, but their two wins in conference action came against Boston College and North Carolina. Those have been two of the worst teams in the ACC this year and this game could prove to be more challenging for the Golden Bears if they aren't at their best.
Sagapolutele has shown promise, averaging around 242 passing yards per game. He struggled early in Cal's last game against North Carolina but turned things around nicely as the game went on. Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones has completed 61.9% of his passes with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions for the season. Cal’s defense must account for the run from Drones along with his passing.

I think that Virginia Tech should win this game at home as a favorite against a Cal team that hasn't proven itself against even a decent opponent in the ACC yet this year. But I will take the points with the Golden Bears in this matchup. Cal has the more consistently explosive passing attack and that should help them to stick around here. I could see this being a field goal game in either direction in what should be a good start to ACC play for this weekend in college football.
